A group of Cuban migrants who have been drifting in a makeshift boat off the coast of Grand Cayman for nearly two weeks have been told to leave or face detention.

The group of more than 30 boaters, showed up on June 14 and have been drifting along the coast of Cayman for 11 days.

Acting Chief Immigration Officer Bruce Smith says the department has told the migrants to leave today or be taken into custody.

10 of the Cubans had elected to stay behind to be repatriated while more than 20 decided to continue their journey.

Smith says a number of Cuban migrants are already being held in the George Town Immigration Detention Centre and are awaiting repatriation to Cuba.
