Antigua to name Lester Bird as sixth national hero

Published:Saturday | June 28, 2014 | 1:21 PM

Former Antiguan Prime Minister Lester Bird is to be named as the country’s sixth national hero.

However, incoming Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who made the announcement yesterday, gave no details about when this would be done.

Browne was speaking yesterday after the 76 year-old Bird was sworn in as a senior minister in the new Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ALP) administration.

Bird will join his father Vere Bird senior, Sir George Walter, Dame Nellie Robinson, King Court and cricketing icon, Sir Viv Richards as national heroes in Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne says the country owe the longstanding legislator a debt of gratitude, calling him the father of modern Antigua and Barbuda.
