Welfare Association in Trinidad against soldiers conducting patrols without police
Trinidad’s Police Social and Welfare Association says it's against members of the army patrolling crime hot spots without the presence of police personnel.
Soldiers have been patrolling volatile communities in east Port-of-Spain as well as in Laventille where a soldier was shot and killed last week.
Members of the community have accused the soldiers of using excessive force and have been calling for the police to be involved in the patrols.
The police interest group says it is very concerned that soldiers are being allowed to exercise powers similar to those of police officers.
