Guyana steps up security after failed prison break
Authorities in Guyana have stepped up security at the main Georgetown prison, following a foiled attempt by an infamous group of prisoners to break out of jail on the weekend.
The six men are all said to be members of the Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins gang, named after the notorious Guyanese prisoner who was shot and killed by members of the Joint security team earlier this year.
Prison Director Dale Erskine said the inmates, who are being held for a number of serious offences, including murder, broke out of the Capitol Section of the holding facility about 3:45 a.m. on Sunday.
An alert prison officer observed them making efforts to get over the outer wall of the prison and raised an alarm.
Five of the escapees were recaptured in the prison compound, while quick response by the police led to the recapture of the sixth prisoner.
The incident has led to an increase in Joint Service patrols at the jail.
