Bermuda's opposition wants Governor Fergusson to resign

Bermuda’s main parliamentary opposition wants Governor George Fergusson to resign after he declined to set up a commission of inquiry into allegations of land grabs across the country.

Last week the Bermuda Parliament voted 15 to 13 to pass a motion moved by the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) calling for the enquiry.

However, on Thursday Fergusson said while the debate had raised serious concerns, they were not clear or urgent enough to warrant a commission of inquiry.

However, reacting to the statement, Opposition spokesman for immigration Walton Brown, who piloted the motion in Parliament, said the Governor should resign for failing to respect the will of the people.

Opposition Leader Marc Bean has labelled Ferguson's explanation as a sham and a farce and says Opposition legislators will abstain from participating in parliament until they have a solution to the issue.

Ferguson is appointed by Britain as Bermuda is an Overseas British Territory.
