Double Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson was named Sportsman of the Year at the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee’s annual award ceremony at the President’s House in Port of Spain last night.

Thompson shot to international prominence this year when he finished second behind record-breaker Usain Bolt in the 100-metre final of the Beijing Olympics in August.

The 23-year-old also anchored T&T’s 4 by 100-metre silver medal performance alongside Keston Bledman, Marc Burns and Emmanuel Callendar, who were also recognised at the ceremony.

The award for Sportswoman of the year went to Thompson’s former LSU schoolmate Kelly Ann Baptiste, who was a champion in the NCAA Outdoor 100 metres and Indoor 60-metre events.

T&T’s national cricket captain Daren Ganga was named Sports Personality of the Year.
