Bermuda's ruling party chairman resigns over donation controversy
Thad Hollis has resigned as chairman of the ruling One Bermuda Alliance, just days after releasing a hard-hitting report into a US$300,000 donation to a party-linked organisation.
The cash was donated by US tycoon Nathan Landow and a group of business associates in the run-up to the December 2012 general election.
The Alliance narrowly won the election 19 months after being formed, ousting the Progressive Labour Party.
The labour party had led the country for 14 years.
A controversy that followed the donation led to the resignation of Craig Cannonier as Premier in May.
Hollis' report said then-campaign manager Michael Fahy, gave the green light for the donation that was wired to Bermuda by Landow and his associates – to be deposited in the Bermuda Political Action Club account at the Bank of Butterfield.
The money was aimed at mobilising voters in a grassroots campaign but the party executives, including Hollis, were unaware of the fund’s existence until 18 months later.
