High interest in St Lucia economic citizenship - PM
CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Jul 27, CMC- Prime Minister Kenny Anthony has reported significant interest across the globe since St Lucia announced three months ago that it would be exploring possible introduction of an economic citizenship programme.
During her throne speech in April, Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, said that the government would establish a task force to examine existing programmes in other countries and make recommendations to cabinet.
“The announcement by the Governor General has evoked tremendous interest right across the globe on this issue,” said Anthony who last week returned from a number of investment missions in Europe.
Dr. Anthony, who is also Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, said he felt the real reason for the interest was because St Lucia has a good reputation with an integrity that was 'as solid as ever'.
“People believe in St Lucia and they know if we have to go that route we will not only introduce an attractive programme, but a programme that can earn us respect and admiration,” he said.
While acknowledging that there was 'a lot of interest' in the initiative, Anthony however made it clear that St. Lucia could not 'rest on our laurels'.
He disclosed that he had written to the leader of the opposition to nominate someone on the task force mentioned by Dame Pearlette, and said that a proposal on this body would go before cabinet next week.
