UK says no to dissolution of Bermuda's parliament

Published:Wednesday | July 30, 2014 | 1:35 PM

The British government has rejected an attempt by Bermuda's opposition Progressive Labour Party (PLP) to have parliament dissolved and Governor George Fergusson recalled in a row over an inquiry into allegations of historic land grabs in the island dating back to the 1920s.

The move came after Opposition Leader Marc Bean sent a letter to London in protest at the Governor’s decision not to set up a commission of inquiry into land transactions after a vote in the House of Assembly.

Bean said the Governor should be recalled to Britain and that the United Kingdom should order a general election to be held.

However, Mark Simmons, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for the Overseas Territories, says he has full confidence in the Governor and does not intend to recall him.

He says he does not agree that the Bermuda House of Assembly should be dissolved.
