A senior executive of Trinidad’s oil company, Petrotrin, has been suspended pending investigations into a recent oil spill.

Petrotrin chairman, Lindsay Gillette, announced at the weekend, that vice-president Mado Bachan, was suspended, with other suspensions to come.

The company also announced the appointment of an independent auditor to conduct further investigations on the leaking tank at the refinery.

The spill in Marabella has caused severe discomfort to more than 200 residents and is expected to cost the company millions of dollars.

Last Friday, head of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union Ancel Roget said Petrotrin was attempting to cover up its failure to properly maintain the tank by hiding documents, copies of which were obtained by the union.
