Jamaica departs for St Kitts
Jamaica’s senior cricketers departed this afternoon for St Kitts and Nevis to play the Leeward Islands in their opening fixture of the 2009 West Indies Cricket Board four-day championships, which bowls off on Friday in three territories.
After their opening round match, the Jamaicans will be away to Trinidad and Tobago and Combined Campuses and Colleges in Barbados, before returning home for their fourth-round match against Barbados.
If Jamaica retain their title in the new home-and-away format, they will become the first team to repeat as regional four-day champions since Barbados registered back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.
Jamaica will be missing eight national players who are currently on West Indies duties in New Zealand. However, there are four players – Donovan Pagon, Brenton Parchment, Wavell Hinds and David Bernard – with West Indies senior team experience.
The squad includes three uncapped players, opener Horace Miller and pacer Jason Dawes and former Jamaica Under-19 bowler, leg-spinner Gavin Wallace.
Dawes and Miller represented the West Indies at the International Cricket Council Youth Under 19 World Cup in Bangladesh early last year.
