Guyana's ruling party denies undermining Chief Elections Officer

Guyana's ruling People’s Progressive Party has denied allegations that it was engaged in a strategy to undermine the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield.



The party's general secretary Clement Rohee told a press conference that the party does not have a problem with Lowenfield’s leadership but is concerned about the integrity of the voter’s list.



Earlier this month, the ruling party said it found the names of almost 3,000 dead people included on the Preliminary List of Electors.



However, the Guyana Elections Commission rejected the allegations with the Deputy Chief Elections Officer Vishnu Persaud saying that while the names of dead people were included in the National Register of Registrants they are flagged when the preliminary list is extracted.



Guyana is preparing for a possible early general election.
