Philippines sends Marines to Haiti on peacekeeping mission

One-hundred-and-fifty-seven members of the Philippine Navy left yesterday for Haiti to serve as United Nations peacekeepers in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
The peacekeeping contingent, of sailors and Marines, is the first to be deployed by the Philippines after Filipino peacekeepers were engaged in a standoff with Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights.
Contingent commander Aldrin Doctor said he is optimistic that their deployment will be peaceful.
The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti has been in operation there since 2004.
