The Mexican government has unveiled emergency measures to protect its economy from the global financial crisis and the recession in the United States.

According to President Felipe Calderon the country is now facing a period of great difficulty and rising unemployment.

He’s promising nearly $150 million to struggling industries in a bid to save thousands of jobs.

Mr. Calderon says the measures being taken should protect half a million jobs, mostly in export industries that depend heavily on the US market.

The plan also includes the freezing of petrol prices and increasing unemployment benefits.
