The authorities in the United States said the Coast Guard has repatriated 100 Haitian migrants to their homeland after they were spotted in an overloaded vessel northeast of Cuba.
The Coast Guard said crewmembers detected on radar the 25-foot sail freighter with the Haitians on board while on a routine patrol of the Caribbean Sea on Friday.
The Coast Guard said the Haitians were returned to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, on Monday.
The agency said it has increased its patrol of the Caribbean during the winter season because strong winds and unusually large waves can make it more dangerous for those trying to reach the United States.
The Coast Guard said it has repatriated 259 Haitians since the beginning of the year.
