Guyana’s parliament Speaker seeks help to end political gridlock

The Speaker of Guyana’s parliament, Raphael Trotman, has written to the Commonwealth urging the London-based organisation to intervene with the intention to end the political gridlock in the country.



Trotman asked the Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma, to send a delegation to the CARICOM country.



Guyana has been thrown into a political crisis after President Donald Ramotar to prorogue parliament and effectively run the country over the next six months.



Ramotar claims he had earlier indicated a desire for the parliament, in its post-recess sittings, to deliberate and give priority to important matters relating to the development of the country.



However, his actions are largely seen as attempts to avoid the passing of a vote of no-confidence against the Government.
