Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said the country’s socialist economy is not in danger from the low oil price and global economic crisis.

Chavez said since he took office 10 years ago more than two million people have been taken out of extreme poverty and that the country\'s economy was well protected from the global economic crisis.

He is dismissing suggestions by the opposition that there is an economic crisis in Venezuela.

The opposition has been claiming that inflation and crime have worsened since Chavez took office.

He argues that there has been a 7 percent rise in the index of human development in Venezuela since he became president.
