Health authorities have confirmed the first case of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus (Chik-V) in Belize.
Interim head of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr Marvin Manzanero says the confirmed case came from one of several samples that were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency in Trinidad and Tobago in October.
According to Manzanero, the victim is from the largely Hispanic community of Las Flores.
He says health authorities are already undertaking public-awareness campaigns in the area.
