CCL warns of massive job losses
The General Secretary of the umbrella Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), Lincoln Lewis, is concerned that massive job losses could be in store across the Caribbean.
Mr. Lewis has suggested that the region needs to be more proactive in addressing the situation.
While acknowledging that countries across the world were feeling the effects of the current global economic downturn, he warned that failure by the region to devise an immediate and appropriate response will lead to a drastic cut back in labour.
The CCL spokesman said it was important for countries to harness their resources but lamented that to date there has not been a coming together of minds in the Caribbean.
He said the CCL is in the process of crafting its own response to the challenges and has already called on its affiliates and members across the region to zero in on the issue.
His comments come against the backdrop of recent lay offs, blamed on the global economic downturn that is also fuelling job losses in major markets such as the United States and Europe.
