The Venezuelan parliament has approved a plan that will allow President Hugo Chavez to stand for re-election for an unlimited number of times.
The constitutional amendment must be approved by a referendum within 30 days.
It will be the second time that the proposals are put to a vote.
They were defeated just over a year ago.
The opposition is maintaining its position that a new referendum would be unconstitutional.
President Chavez said he’s needed for at least another 10 years to consolidate what he calls his socialist revolution.
