Senator collapsed during inauguration luncheon

There has been no further news on the condition of US senator Ted Kennedy who collapsed earlier during the inauguration luncheon.

A congressional aide said medical staff had evacuated Senator Kennedy, apparently suffering from convulsions.

He was diagnosed last year with a cancerous brain tumour.

Mr Obama expressed his concern and said his thoughts were with the family.

Senator Robert Byrd was also reported to have been taken ill, but his office later said he was fine.

Senator Byrd was reportedly removed from the lunch in his wheelchair but it was not clear whether this had been for health reasons.
