Antigua to honour Obama
Prime Minister of Antigua Baldwin Spencer has announced that the scheduled renaming of the country’s highest peak in honour of US president Barack Obama will take place on August 4, which is Obama’s birthday.
In a statement yesterday, Spencer also described Obama’s inauguration as the first African American president of the US as a momentous occasion, not only for people of colour, but for people of all races around the world.
The Antigua leader also recommitted his government to honouring President Obama with the renaming of Boggy Peak as Mount Obama.
The announcement came last November following Obama’s historic election victory.
Despite criticisms of the move, Spencer said his Cabinet would move to institute a body of appropriate persons and organisations to plan the renaming ceremony.
