West Indies to honour legends, Chanderpaul
A number of legends of West Indies cricket and Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be honoured during England’s current visit to the West Indies.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has approved the plans for hosting of a dinner on February 2 in Jamaica to honour West Indies greats Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Garfield Sobers, as well as Chanderpaul the reigning World Cricketer-of-the-Year.
At the dinner, the WICB will honour the 100th anniversary of George Headley’s birth, the 80th anniversary of England’s Test at Sabina Park against West Indies and the 60th anniversary of Weekes’ world record of five consecutive Test hundred.
Tributes will also be paid to the 50th anniversary of Sobers’ World Record of 365 not out, and Chanderpaul’s World Cricketer-of-the-Year award.
Chanderpaul was named World Cricketer-of-the-Year at the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) Awards held at a glittering ceremony in Dubai last September.
He was also named in the ICC Test Team-of-the-Year.
