Bolt/Walker nominated for RJR top awards
The world’s fastest man Usain Bolt and Olympic 400 metres gold medallist Melaine Walker headline 12 nominees for the RJR Sports Foundation’s 2008 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, set for the Courtleigh Auditorium, New Kingston on Friday, February 13.
The nominees were announced during a Press Conference this morning at RJR.
Bolt captured the global imagination with three world records at the Beijing Olympics last August.
In Beijing, Bolt smashed the 100 and 200-metre world records in stunning times of 9.69 and 19.30 seconds, respectively, and linked up with his Jamaican teammates to clock another world record 37.10 in the sprint relay.
The other male’s nominees are West Indies captain Chris Gayle and his teammate Jerome Taylor, footballer Luton Shelton and former world record holder Asafa Powell.
The remaining female’s nominees are, Olympic gold medallists Shelly Ann Fraser and Veronica Campbell Brown, Sherika Williams, Kerron Stewart, Sherone Simpson and Stephanie Taylor,
A new award, the People’s Choice Performance of the Year, will also highlight this year’s ceremony.
The nominees for that award are Nikita Miller, Ricardo Fuller, Shelly Ann Fraser, Daemon Benjamin and Jerome Taylor.
