The Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez is warning of a possible civil war if a referendum on whether he should be able to seek re-election indefinitely fails, and the opposition is returned to power.
Chavez said the opposition will move swiftly to overturn the social reforms his government had implemented.
Meanwhile, reports have described Chavez’s comments as part of an intensified campaign to mobilise his supporters.
Polls have indicated that most persons are against the referendum.
The Venezuelan president has said he will accept the results of the referendum, which comes less than a year and a half after voters rejected a similar measure.
