Guyana to import sugar

The government in Guyana has disclosed that it has been forced to look outside to meet its domestic demand for the product.

However, head of the Presidential Secretariat, Roger Luncheon, said he could not confirm reports that the country plans to buy about 14,000 tonnes of sugar from Guatemala.

He said that Guyana was looking at a number of options to facilitate the provision of sugar on the local market.

Luncheon said the move had become necessary since the 2009 sugar crop will commence later than expected, owing to recent heavy rains and flooding that has adversely impacted the industry.
