At least 21 police officers have been killed in Afghanistan following a suicide bombing.

Many others were wounded in the attack in Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province in the south of the country.

Officials say the suicide bomber was dressed in police uniform.

According to Uruzgan provincial police chief Juma Gul Himat, the bomber had entered the police compound as a group of reservists was training.

He said the bomber then detonated explosives, which was strapped to his body under his uniform.

The attack has been described as the worst on the police in recent months in Afghanistan.

The Taleban has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
