Benn threatens to fire air traffic controllers
The transport minister Robeson Benn has threatened to fire striking air traffic controllers if they do not end their industrial action.
The Guyana Public Service Union, which represents the workers, is daring the minister to carry out the threat.
Union president Patrick Yarde said his union’s entire membership is on standby for industrial action should the air traffic controllers be fired.
The union boss said Mr Benn’s approach to the issue should be condemned, and should not be regarded as Government policy on the treatment of workers.
The workers have been on strike since Friday, demanding outstanding overtime payments and salary increases for 2008.
They are also upset about other working conditions.
Mr. Benn is insisting that the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority cannot afford the higher salaries being demanded.
