Captain Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan both struck half centuries as the West Indies reached 156 for one at Sports Time in response to England’s first innings of 318 on the second day of the opening Test at Sabina Park.

Gayle is undefeated on 70 while Sarwan is 71 not out.

Andrew Flintoff struck early for England as opener Devon Smith failed to pick up a full-length delivery and was eventually ruled out leg before wicket for six.

Smith had initially been given not out by umpire Tony Hill of New Zealand but after a TV review he changed his decision to send Smith on his way.

There were five referrals in the second session as both sides made use of the new rule that allows teams to challenge umpires’ decision. Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar both failed in challenging their decisions.

The two others were Leg Before Wicket appeals against Sarwan. The first one, given not out by Hill, was upheld while, after being given out to the second, Hill overturned that decision after Sarwan challenged.

Earlier, spinner Sulieman Benn took career-best four for 77 to end as West Indies top bowlers.

Jerome Taylor three for 74 and Darren Powell two for 54 supported him.
