Authorities in Cuba are reporting success in combating the illegal drugs trade.

The state-owned Granma newspaper has quoted officials of the Interior Ministry as saying that a total of 1,800 kilogrammes of drugs were seized last year.

This is the second largest amount of drugs in 14 years.

The quantity includes 260 packages that arrived on the island’s coasts.

The newspaper also said despite reports about huge volumes of drugs being taken along routes close to Cuba, only 44 suspicious ships and four planes were detected near national territory.

In addition, 121 tourists were caught with small quantities of illegal drugs and faced customs measures in line with the Cuban legislation.
