700 police officers fired in Dominica

Dominican President Leonel Fernandez has fired 700 police officers and forcibly retired 31 military personnel in a bid to rid the government of corruption.



President Fernandez says corruption has been a major issue in the country.



In the past six-months 535 members of the military have been dismissed on suspicion of involvement in the trafficking of drugs.



The former head of the Dominican National Drug Control has been one such casualty.



President Fernandez has expressed confidence that his government will stem the tide of nacrotrafficking.



Citizens believe that corruption is entrenched in the security forces.
