At least 16 people have been killed in a shooting incident at a school in south-west Germany.

The police say most of the dead are students at the Albertville Secondary School in Winnenden, north of Stuttgart.

Police have identified the shooter as a 17 year old former student who graduated from the Albertville High School last year.

They say he opened fire in two classrooms early this morning before fleeing.

He then hijacked a car, triggering a manhunt, and was found in a nearby town where he was confronted by police and killed in the ensuing shootout.
