Australia defeat West Indies
West Indies suffered a 47-run defeat to defending champions Australia last night in the final preliminary round Group ‘A’ game of the International Cricket Council Women’s World Cup at Drummoyne Oval in Australia.
Australia, sent to bat by West Indies, scored 211 for seven off their allotted 50 overs against the bowling of Shakera Selman two for 28, Stafanie Taylor two for 35 and Anisa Mohammed two for 45.
Alex Blackwell 46 not out, Shelley Nitschke 45 and Jodie Fields 42 scored most runs for the Aussies.
Needing 212 for victory, West Indies slumped from 49 for one to 57 for four in the space of four overs and eventually ended on 164 for seven off 50 overs.
Deandra Dottin top scored for West Indies with 51, while Stafanie Taylor chipped in with 32.
However, West Indies still managed to get into the Super Six phrase after maintaining a top-three position in the Group with two points.
New Zealand, who won the Group with six points, and Australia have also advanced.
In Group ‘B’ England completed the first round with a perfect record after beating Pakistan by eight wickets at North Sydney Oval, while India beat Sir Lanka by 35 runs at Bankstown Oval.
