Antigua poll delays continue

Published:Friday | March 13, 2009 | 10:14 AM

Up to late last night ballots were still being counted in Antigua and Barbuda, following yesterday’s general election.

The polls closed at 6 p.m. but voting continued well into the night because of a computer glitch, which caused lengthy delays earlier in the day.

At the close of the polls, hundreds of voters were still standing in line to cast their ballots and therefore had to be accommodated by the authorities.

However, the Assistant Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, said the day’s activities were peaceful.

The CMC is reporting that based on the day\'s events, overall voter turnout was less than the 90 percent in the last election in 2004.

The opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) was challenging the incumbent United Progressive Party (UPP).

The election was also contested by four independents, as well as four candidates from the Organisation for National Development and one from the Barbuda People\'s Movement.
