The leader of a United Nations Security Council mission to Haiti is reporting that the country has made notable progress in terms of national security.

According to Ambassador Jorge Urbina of Costa Rica the greatest improvement is found in the drop in the crime rate and greater confidence levels within the police force.

Mr. Urbina said there has also been some amount of progress in judicial reform in Haiti.

He said widespread poverty and vulnerability to disasters continue to pose challenges for the country.
