CARICOM to lobby for TCI
CARICOM countries are to make representation to the British government on behalf of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham who read in Parliament the March 24 statement by CARICOM, proposed that each country make separate representation to the British government.
However, he said the two political parties in the TCI would need to agree on some things.
Following the release of a scathing interim report into allegations of corruption made against the ruling Progressive National Party administration, the UK government has revealed plans for direct rule of the Turks and Caicos for an initial period of two years.
The plan, which is expected to take effect by month end, puts the island’s British Governor in charge of the territory’s day-to-day affairs, while the Premier, as well as members of his Cabinet and the House of Assembly are put out of work.
Ingraham, who has been speaking to representatives of the islands’ political directorate, remains hopeful of a compromise.
