Mr Stanford wants a federal judge to free up some of his money to allow him to hire a lawyer.

Mr Stanford has denied wrongdoing, and says he hasn’t been able to hire a lawyer to defend himself because his assets and money have been seized.

The Commission claims that Mr. Stanford and top officials of the Stanford Financial Group were involved in an $8 billion fraud.

They are said to have lied to investors about the safety of investments sold as certificates of deposit.
