Andy Flower was hired today as the new director of the English cricket team, ending months of upheaval ahead of the Ashes series with Australia.
The former Zimbabwe batsman made a strong impression as stand-in coach during the three-month tour of the Caribbean at the start of this year as he replaced the fired Peter Moores.
Moores\' exit was prompted by his deteriorating relationship with Kevin Pietersen, who relinquished the captaincy as a result.
The 40-year-old Flower was initially reluctant to fill the role having been hired by Moores as his assistant in 2007.
He only decided to apply for the position during the tour of the West Indies, where he produced a one-day series victory after losing the test series.
