Maria Van Beek, the court-appointed manager of CLICO-Guyana, is now hospitalized after being shot earlier today.

The shooting comes less than a week after Ms. Van Beek reported that CLICO-Guyana’s US$ 60 million liability exceeded its assets by $5 million.

The police say Ms. Van Beek was shot when she stopped at a junction on the usually busy Lombard Street in Georgetown.

According to Assistant Police Commissioner for Law Enforcement, Seelall Persaud the woman was shot by a gunman through her driver\'s seat window.

In recent days, CLICO Guyana\'s insurance agents have been agitating to be paid monies due to them.

CLICO\'s parent company, Trinidad-based CL Financial was taken over by the government in Port of Spain, after it was revealed that the financial institution was experiencing serious difficulties.

A number of its subsidiaries have since been placed under judicial management.
