West Indies captain Chris Gayle was dismissed for 10 as his team Kolkata Knight Riders was beaten by Deccan Chargers in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa yesterday.

Electing to bat, Kolkata Knight Riders scored 101 all out in 19.4 overs in the day/night match at Newlands and the Deccan Chargers rushed to victory at 104 for two in just 13.1 overs.

Gayle was beginning to look threatening when he was dismissed. He smashed a boundary past point then hammered a six over mid-wicket but was caught next ball.

West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards played a key role in helping the Deccan Chargers to victory.

Edwards got no wicket but his four overs only cost six runs – the lowest conceded in a completed IPL spell.

Gayle’s Kolkata Knight Riders will next play Kings Eleven Punjab tomorrow in Durban, while Edward’s Deccan Chagers be in action again on Wednesday against Bangalore Royal Challengers in Cape Town.
