Former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell is expected to compete at the IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting in Doha, Qatar on May 8 despite aggravating an ankle injury on the weekend.

Powell pulled up while anchoring the Jamaican 4 x 100-metre relay team at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, jogging to the finish line in discomfort.

However, Powell’s agent Paul Doyle says his athlete will honour his obligation in two weeks, as the injury is not bad.

Powell anchored the Jamaican team to a world record 37.10 seconds at the Beijing Olympic Games. Two members of that team, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter were on the team in Philadelphia.

Organisers of the May 30 Reebok Grand Prix in New York City say Powell and his Jamaican teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser have signed up to appear at the meet.

Fraser was the first Jamaican woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres. She achieved the feat at the Beijing Olympics last year beating compatriots Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson.

The Reebok Grand Prix is the fourth stop of the USA Track and Field’s Championship Series.
