Suriname bans pork imports
The Suriname government has announced a ban on the importation of pigs and pork, in response to the outbreak of swine flu.
A press release from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries says all importation of animals, raw pork meat and semen are prohibited.
Surinamese authorities are closely monitoring pig farms and increasing inspections of facilities.
Pig farmers have been cautioned to minimise physical contact with other farms and to limit visits from outsiders to their facilities.
Meanwhile members of the public have been advised to inform authorities immediately of unauthorised slaughtering of animals or smuggling.
Most of Suriname's pork imports are processed products, while only a small portion is raw meat.
The United States is the source of most pork imported into the country.
