Antigua opposition calls for new budget

At least one of Antigua’s Opposition Senators is calling for the government to present a new or revised budget because of an expected financing gap of well over 25 percent in the fiscal package announced last December.

The Spencer administration had said at the time that the world recession would not have impacted too negatively on the country\'s revenue intake.

However with a fall-off in tourism arrivals, and the financial problems of the Allen Stanford business group of companies, the administration says it expects revenue to decrease by at least 20 percent.

Senator Lennox Weston, a former financial secretary, says the government should present a new budget to parliament for consideration under the circumstances.
