Jamaica is among three CARICOM countries to benefit from a $3 billion pilot programme aimed at boosting agricultural production in the region.

Executive Director of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Agricultural Research Development Institute, Dr. Arlington Cheny said Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago would also benefit from Fund for Commodities, a United Nations intergovernmental financial institution.

Dr. Cheny said the funds would be used in pilot projects on using Protected Agriculture Greenhouses to produce vegetables and herbs in the Caribbean.

He said the project would target the tourist market in the Caribbean.

And he said it would expand the use of greenhouses, improve yields, enhance seasonal availability, and improve product quality and productivity.

Dr. Cheny said the project would be conducted in collaboration with the Inter American Institute of Agriculture and the Ministries of Agriculture in the three countries.
