Former Suriname trade minister Siegfried Gilds has been sentenced to a year in jail on conviction of money laundering charges.

The court handed down its ruling after evidence indicated that Gilds used ill-gotten gains to buy houses and engage in developing real estate properties between 2000-2005.

Gilds was also found guilty of bribing a witness.

He however was acquitted on the charge of being part of a criminal organisation.

His attorneys said they would appeal the court ruling.
