Deputy Integrity Commission chairman resigns

The deputy chairman of the Trinidad’s integrity commission, Jeffery McFarlene, has resigned days after being appointed.

The resignation follows criticisms that Mr McFarlane’s appointment was a conflict of interest, with some describing it as unlawful.

It’s reported that Mr. McFarlane currently serves on the board of directors of a number of state-owned companies.

Trinidad’s attorney general Kamla Persad-Bissessar had written to President George Richards urging him to re-consider McFarlane’s appointment.

The attorney general cited Section 2 of the Public Life Act, which makes it illegal for public official to sit on the commission.
