The World Health Organisation (WHO) is to convene a meeting with experts next week to discuss the possibility of making a vaccine for the H1N1 influenza virus.
Director of the WHO\'s initiative for vaccine research Marie-Paule Kieny says the initial steps to develop a vaccine has begun and a prototype is expected to be available some time this month.
However, she says it would take at least six months before the first vaccine would be made available to the public.
The WHO has confirmed 1,893 cases of the influenza virus across 23 countries, since it first appeared in Mexico more than two weeks ago.
