Manchester United defeated rivals Manchester City 2-0 yesterday to move a step closer to retaining the English Premier League title.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s deflected free-kick in the 18th minute put United ahead and Carlos Tevez struck the City woodwork before powering in a 20-yard strike off the post to extend United’s advantage in the 45th minute.

The win takes Manchester United three points clear of Liverpool with a game still in hand, and four points from their final three games would guarantee a third consecutive Premier League title.

Chelsea guaranteed they will finish third in the table after routing Arsenal 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
