CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington has called for more interaction between regional leaders and local government entities to allow for greater participation in the regional integration movement.

Addressing the Commonwealth Local Government Conference now on in the Bahamas, Mr. Carrington said governments rooted in the rural communities have an advantage in providing for the needs of their people.

The Secretary General noted further that local government authorities are closer to many of the society’s key needs such as poverty alleviation.

The three-day conference, which is held every two years, provides a forum for local government practitioners to exchange ideas and best practices, and chart the course for improving local government services throughout the Commonwealth.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding and his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart, Patrick Manning are also scheduled to address the conference.
