At least 10 people died after a boat carrying nearly 30 migrants, most of them Haitian sank off the cost of southern Florida.

The US Coast Guard reports that another 17 people were rescued in an operation involving helicopters, a jet and a vessel.

The Coast Guard believes almost all of those on board the vessel are now accounted for.

At least 1,500 Haitian migrants are intercepted at sea and repatriated by the US Coast Guard each year.

At the peak of the exodus of Haitian refugees in the early 1990s more than 60,000 migrants were intercepted at sea.

News of the latest accident first emerged when three people were spotted by a boat and rescued 10 hours after their vessel sank.
